The Godly Man’s Picture & A Godly Wife by Puritan Thomas Watson

Spiritual Growth

The soul being so precious, and salvation so glorious-it is the highest point of prudence to make preparations for the eternal world. It is beyond all dispute, that there is an inheritance in light; and it is most strenuously asserted in Holy Scripture that there must be a fitness and suitability for it (Col. 1:12). If anyone asks, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?” the answer is, “He who has clean hands, and a pure heart” (Psalm 24:4). To describe such a person is the work of this ensuing treatise. Here you have the godly man’s portrait, and see him portrayed in his full lineaments.

The Turning Point, a novel based on the Prodigal Son

a-brothers-vow-finalIf we look at life as a journey we will see that along the path we encounter many crossroads. Depending on the side we decide to walk when we encounter those forks on the road will determine how our journey will continue.

Making the right decision at those times can be quite challenging. We may feel external or internal pressures to pursue either side of the path. We have to always remember that at the end of the day it is us and only us who will either suffer the consequences or reap the benefits of our final decision.

I know that at the same time sometimes we sit at that fork, thinking that no decision is better than the wrong one. This cannot be further from the truth. Staying stagnant will always make us more miserable that any pain that we can encounter.

I once heard Joyce Meyers say, “You have to make the best decision with the information you have at the moment. Even if it’s the incorrect one God will give you Grace because he knew you were trying to do the best with what you knew”  Those words have stayed with me for a long time and when I know that I need to make a decision, that may constitute a risk I remember these words. Obviously I research, seek counsel because I need that portion of the best information possible to assess the elements of my decision, but at the end of the day I have decisions to make to further my growth and to fulfill my purpose.

In my new book, “A Brother’s Vow” Randall has made a promise that he never thought he would need to fulfill. Then he’s face with having to make a life changing decision in order to fulfill it. Join my journey and find out if he did and if so how it turned out.

Let’s chat with Naty:

BEV: What inspired you to write this book?

NATY: I am always inspired by the Parable of the Prodigal Son and that’s part of what inspired this story. There were times where decisions are clouded by condemnation or rebellion; so I decided to write a story from that standpoint.

BEV: How did you come up with the title?

NATY: To be honest my first title was “My promise to keep” Because the story centers around a promise that Randall, the main character, makes to his twin brother Brian and the events that follow him trying to fulfill that promise. I found that there were too many books with that title already so I changed it to “A Brother’s Vow” as it is more fitting to theme in the book.

BEV: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

NATY: That no matter how far gone or deep in trouble we think we are, God always welcomes us with open arms and there’s always the chance for new beginnings.

BEV: How much of the book is real?

NATY: Nothing, this is a pure work of fiction.

BEV: What book are you reading now?

NATY: I just finished “Waking up Married” by Mira Lynn Kelly a few weeks ago which I truly enjoyed. I’m about to start “Until Forever” by Darlene Shortridge

BEV: What are your current projects?

NATY: I have a powerful book on the subject of domestic violence titled, “Breaking Free” that is at the second draft revision and a Christmas romance novella, “Lost Love on Christmas Day” which is also at the second draft revision level. I’m hoping to be able to release those next year.

BEV: Do you have any advice for other writers?

NATY: Never give up and keep on writing. Be open to correction and feedback.

BEV: Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

NATY: Open yourselves to the opportunity of supporting indie authors. You will find that some traditionally published books are great and some are not; the same is true for the indie books. I have recently been watching some indie movies and found some great ones. It is time to open our minds to the concept that quality doesn’t always come behind a corporate label. Happy reading!

New Mystery – “On the Buckle” by Candace Carrabus

On the Buckle

Y’all know I grew up riding horses, and that’s why they appear so often in my stories. So when I found Candace Carrabus’ books, I was thrilled to know she is both an experienced rider and a talented writer. If you like horses, or just love of a good mystery, I totally recommend her mystery, On the Buckle. (PG-13…it is for grown-ups, y’all)

Here’s a great line from the book that describes the allure of riding; “When I get in the saddle, some channel opens that is closed to most others…it put me in a zone of some kind where nothing could touch us-if I was on a horse I knew was ready, a horse that could do it.”

Aha! What she said!

The main character, Viola Parker, is sassy, funny, hooked on whipped cream straight from the can, and shares what we all feel about a good ride. And then finds herself in the middle of a murder mystery that had me  chomping at the bit to find out who-done-it until the end.

I chatted with Candace recently about her research for the mystery (no spoilers, but you’ll be intrigued), her writing, and riding.

BEV: I know you did quite a bit of research for On the Buckle. What was the most unusual topic you looked into?

candaceCANDACE: This is impossible to answer fully without giving away an important part of the story, but I’ll tell you that I read Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. Also, I called the famous University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility known as the Body Farm. When I asked what I needed to know, the person I spoke with paused, then said, “Hmmmm…I don’t think we’ve ever tried that.” I asked them if they would, but they never got back to me. Yet.

BEV: Reader, when you read On the Buckle, you’ll discover what…ahem…process of decomp Candace was inquiring about. I wouldn’t be surprised if “the Farm” is undergoing the research even as we speak! Candace, what’s next in the series?

CANDACE:  Dreamhorse Mystery #2 will pick up almost where On The Buckle leaves off. Vi is settling in to her new life when her parents come to visit. But is this just a social call? All I can say is, Vi better stay on top of her whipped cream inventory.

BEV: What’s the funniest/most ironic thing that’s happened to you while writing?

CANDACE: When I was writing the first draft of Raver, (the first in her Fantasy series) I had a minor character to introduce, a walk-on with one scene who might occasionally have a role later in the story. At least, that was my plan. Ha! How naive!! She roared onto the page with a bang, insisting on a more major role, impossible to ignore. I’ve had characters talk to me before, but this was the first time I’d had one be so forceful.

BEV: HAHA! Characters can be as head strong as a young colt, right? Thanks for sharing, Candace! Write on, and ride on!

CANDACE: Thanks for having me, Bev!

Candace is on Facebook, you can buy her books on Amazon or from her website, Writing the Ride.

More about Candace: I’ve been writing stories and riding horses-frequently simultaneously-for as long as I can remember. I grew up on Long Island and spent my formative years in the saddle-just imagining. After high school, I traveled to Ness, England and studied at a British Horse Society training school. This was an all-around amazing experience. When I left, I clutched a certification to teach riding in my hot little hand, and I enjoyed instructing riders for many years. Who am I kidding? We know it is the horses who do the teaching. All we can do is try to remain open to what they have to say. Not surprisingly, my fiction and non-fiction are both frequently infused with the mystery and spirituality horses have brought to my life.

More ways to Read a Book, Save a Horse

Last week I told you about a great way to combine reading great books with helping out a good cause. Here are two more titles from the talented Candace Carrabus to do so ( in the spirit of full disclosure, I have been pestering Candace since I read her first novella, Man, Dog, His Owner and Her Lover to write.more.books. PESTERING!! So you have me to thank LOL)  I’m halfway through On the Buckle, a mystery tale led by feisty, frisky, Vi Parker.

As a rider, I know I can trust Candace’s thoroughly accurate and interesting details about riding. As a writer, I’m equally impressed with her storytelling skills. Win-win!

When you buy her books, for a limited time, Candace is donating all her royalties to Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue and Horse Sanctuary. Details following.

Raver jpgI’m telling you, Candace has game. Seriously talented writer. Now back to my Kindle so I can find out whodunnit. Get her books! (In case you missed it, here’s last week’s title: Raver is Contemporary Fantasy.)

Here’s Candace:buy a book, save a horse

In On The Buckle, we meet Vi Parker, who might be the best show-jumper rider around, but whose smart mouth keeps landing her out of work. Now, all that’s between her and a surprise trust fund, is keeping a job for a year and a glowing letter of recommendation.

On the Buckle It’s supposed to be a relaxing—boring!—year of riding “on the buckle.” Between the dead horse visiting Vi’s dreams and the dead bodies piling up, the question isn’t whether she can keep her mouth shut long enough to earn a reference, but whether she’ll live long enough to get it.

Much as I love horses, life wouldn’t be complete without the dogs and cats in it, too. One day, I was looking deeply into the eyes of our black lab, Carlo, and I thought, what if… Well, if you’re a writer, you know what those two little words mean!

man, dog, owner and his loverThe Man, The Dog, His Owner & Her Lover is a novella available in ebook format from Amazon only. Meet Stephanie O’Hanlon. She’s a 40-something workaholic for whom a blank to-do list is crazy-making. When she gets laid off and rescues a huge, smiling dog from a shelter—a dog her friend insists is inhabited by Steph’s lover from a former life—she discovers the true meaning of crazy.

Gabe Fagen is Steph’s handyman, and he’s been crazy-in-love with her since they were teenagers. Steph losing her job might be his chance to finally get to know her better. But will she notice he’s alive with a mysterious dog acting as her guardian angel?

But I digress. Back to the business at hand. Horses. It is with great joy that I am able to further connect my two passions with the Buy a Book—Help a Horse fundraiser for Amaryllis Farm Equine Rescue and Horse Sanctuary.

Amaryllis rescue farm

W.C. Fields famously said, “Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people.”

This non-profit sanctuary’s owner, Christine Barrett-Distefano, works tirelessly on behalf of horses, mules, and ponies as well as some chickens, ducks, goats—you name it—who are no longer wanted by their owners. Owners who often promised to love them forever. Circumstances change, children grow up, horses get old and lame and are too often discarded as easily as yesterday’s news.

But people like Christine are all that stand between a once beloved horse and the misery of neglect and even slaughter. All too often this is also the fate of successful racehorses.

Keeper of Reign – .99 download!

Keeper of ReignToday I’m welcoming Emma Right, author of an exciting new YA Fantasy series. Here’s the first, Keeper of the Reign, .99 for a limited time on Kindle.

Here’s a synopsis:

Books written in blood. Most of them lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell the people of Reign and their surrounding neighbors who blame them for this. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen year old Jules Blaze. Or could it?

Something in the air is brewing and Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his army of Scorpents will invade and destroy the Kingdom of Reign and the Elfies. Already Gehzurolle’s agents, secreted in Reign, are ready to do their master’s bidding.

But for Jules his nightmare has only just begun. Especially since he and his family have inadvertently invoked the interest of Gehzurolle. But why?

In his quest to find answers, and to locate the Ancient Books, Jules loses control over his situations, faces one dilemma after another to save his family, and his Kingdom, and uncovers a family secret that could save his family, and possibly reverse the curse Reign was under. If Jules doesn’t get himself killed first.

From a review by Sunshiny Daze:

“Besides the great story that kept me page-turning with excitement, I loved the interaction of the Blaze children.  I grew up in a large family and recognized a lot from my own childhood.  The characters are well-developed and I felt like I knew them well, and they became friends as I read. I even found myself mourning with them. I’m not giving any plot twists away, but there are some doozies in there!  I wasn’t quite sure who to trust.

Emma Right

And now some thoughts from the author. Welcome, Emma, tell us a bit about yourself, and why you are writing this series.

As a homeschool mother of five, with kids with me the entire day, and a husband who travels a lot, the greatest challenge was trying to get at least a ten minute block of time without being interrupted by some comment, or ‘Help! Mommy! The cat’s scaring the dog!” or “Where is…” or a loud crash coming from somewhere, or a fight between the cat and the bunny…the list continues.

In all this, I had to remind myself that much as I enjoy writing, my kids always come before my book. But some days I struggled to remember that. I share this because I know there are many moms out there who might have this struggle and because the work of a mom seem endless (and sometimes mundane,) but our real gems are the children. We need to remind ourselves, and each other this. They are truly God’s gift to us.

Why did I write Keeper of Reign?

I wanted to write an allegorical fantasy about the fall of man and the redemption story set in a fantasy setting that’s filled with danger and adventure. Something young readers can enjoy but still have a Christian message.

What I hope Keeper of Reign accomplishes:

I hope my readers can see that with the power of the gospel, we can overcome our problems and difficulties. I want to empower young readers with this message, that if they seek the truth (the Ancient Books, in Keeper of Reign) they will find wisdom and answers to life’s problems. It doesn’t mean the answers are going to come easy, but persistence will pay off, and the BIble has the answers.

Starting off on the right hook…not in a pirate sort of way.

This is part of a series I’m posting as I write THE KALEIDOSCOPE A Novel of Unusual Circumstances.

I’ve been reading about making great openings. As soon as I’d arrived at a conclusion (notice I didn’t say The End yet) of most of the story threads, I zoomed back to the beginning.

I don’t know about you, but when I read a novel, I want all the pieces to fit together and the journey to end in a satisfying, even in a clever way, that the author had my satisfaction in mind both from the first to the last.

The First FiftyI picked up a copy of Jeff Gerke’s First Fifty Pages and devoured it/lost sleep/highlightedtheheckoutof. Trained as a screenwriter (and having worked as an editor and successful author), he zooms right to several points I could understand how to implement, and WHY.

Last night, I had critique group to attend, so I printed out my first three pages. After some  a lot of tweaking. I even moved an entire scene to the beginning based on Jeff’s advice. My opening had bogged because it was a lot of blah-blah narrative. But I need the reader to know my guy, I whined.

So Jeff, when is it OKAY to give information? Here’s what he says:

A)   when the reader must want to know it

B)   when the story cannot go on without the information (Kindle loc 683)

As you know, I wanted to raise the bar on myself, so instead of beginning in dialogue or action, I had started out in my MC’s head, and that was borrinng, but he’s a complicated guy.

Aannnddd then I read Jeff’s advice and now I have my MC DOING something, the thoughts in his head are now generic to what he’s doing, even though he’s just on his way to work (I’m also establishing his normal, another necessity of an opening), we see a lot by how he thinks about what’s around him. Notice I said SEE?

So did my tweaking work for my critique buddies Veola, Ron, Ralph and Kelly?

You decide.

Here’s one of the opening paragraph for which I got several positive comments:

“He double-timed the staircase and sailed inside the office building. His steps clapped against tile, echoing around the bank’s tiled lobby. ID card drawn for the guard and swiftly replaced, he tapped a loafered toe to send a subliminal message to the couple selfishly absorbed in a personal discussion, and by 8:58, pushed the elevator button. Despite the challenges of the morning, it was going to be a good day.”

What’s interesting about this one is, I had it buried about five pages later, and when I read Jeff’s logic, I brought it forward to the opening. (BTW, he’s just bypassed a homeless encampment, and that’s why he’s in such a hurry…nice guy, right?)

Something else Jeff said resonated as I realized my “cuts” file is getting longer than my MS. “What you lose in detail, you more than make up for in reader engagement.”

To write complicated characters, which makes them more compelling and makes the reader want to know what happens next, you need to know a LOT of details and background yourself. In first drafts a lot of inner thoughts may find the page, but to follow Jeff’s most compelling nugget now burned into my writerly brain: “Can the camera see it?”

Sean Maxwell

Here’s my BIL Sean, an uber talented cameraman. (He’s smiling because he knows how the camera adds ten pounds. LOL. Or maybe just because he knows how all those gizmos work.)

Like I said, he was a filmmaker by education, but that explanation makes it so much easier to remember than the tired old, “show don’t tell” which doesn’t really say anything to the 21st century brain. But I get camera angles and the importance of “the visual.”

Also this week, I hit a low when I realized how long this was all taking, and I want the book done NOW.

But I read the terrific writer, Jess Walter’s BEAUTIFUL RUINS, a complex, character driven, yet plot complex story about an American actress, and the Italian hotel owner she meets when she’s looking for privacy…a great read y’all.

Anywhoo…Jess admits it took him fifteen years to get the story ready. FIFTEEN YEARS. But it’s a great read, recommended!Beautiful Ruins

A big shout-out of thanks to both Jeff and Jess this week. (And Rebecca’s critique group)

Writers, what’s helped you with your opening?

Readers, What keeps you interested past page one…or worse, what makes you toss the book aside and reach for the remote?

I’m having fun writing The Kaleidoscope, A Novel of Unusual Circumstances, where the main character, Harold, finds himself the custodian of a magical scope that reveals much more than just colorful shapes! Here’s a Pinterest board where I’m gathering images of the characters and setting for Kaleidoscope.

A Christian Romantic Suspense Novella set in 1685, England.

Fear has been Tara’s constant companion since age nine when she witnessed her mother’s murder. Tara’s father moves his family to the ancient castle of Raven’s Cliff, far from the ships that could carry her back to India and the answers she believes lie there. Andrew offers her friendship and guides her gently to the One who will give her peace. Will she find hope for something other than revenge?

Here’s a brief Q&A with the Author, Laura J. Marshall.

Q: What do you think makes a good story?

A: To make a good story, I believe characters that you can relate to are important, as well as being able to place yourself in the scene as you read. I love a “cozy” feel to a book as I read it. I don’t know what the secret is to writing a story with this element, but I hope I achieved it in Persistent Love.

Grace and pride can go together…I’ll prove it!

Be-Still-My-Soul-3D-CoverWe interrupt our regularly scheduled post today to do a little bragging.

A few years ago one of my critique partners, Joanne Bischof, wrote a book that was so different from anything that had ever been written, the plot so out of the ordinary, her characters so messed up compared to books already on the shelves, she wondered if her storyline and bad-boy main character would ever be accepted.

But she persisted, tweaked, edited and poured out her soul into this book (this is supposed to be encouragement to other writers!) and found a very insightful and inspired agent who found the first book in the Cadence of Grace series a home at the very smart publishing house, Waterbrook.

IT WASN’T EASY, BUT IT WAS WORTH IT

I feel like a proud auntie clapping in the seats at the spelling bee as Be Still My Soul begins to progress through the ranks of reviewers, bestseller sales, and attracts attention from  judges in award competitions. Already a Christy nominee, today it was announced that Be Still My Soul is a 2012 Grace Award WINNER.Grace Award 2012

If you haven’t read it yet, run and get a copy. Now. And while you’re at it, get the sequel, Though My Heart is Torn so you’ll be ready for the series finale, My Hope is Found, due out in October.

Here’s a fun interview I did recently with Joanne to give you a glimpse into how real and transparent, smart and funny she is. And hardworking.

Welcome to my corner of the world where I celebrate FRESH STARTSnew beginnings, and explore nature’s beauty in THE SEASONS OF CHERRYVALE series.

FRESH START STORIES, because everyone needs one from time to time.

What better way to start your own fresh start than by sprucing up your garden? Here’s my tip to boost your flowers, vegetables, succulents, or even houseplants, to their lushest growing season ever.

100_0408

Besides water, the correct amount of sunlight is crucial to nurturing growing things, so I am giving away a SUNCALC probe that will take the guesswork out of what you can plant, and where.

With the high cost of groceries, like me you might  be inspired to begin a vegetable garden. In FRESH START SUMMER,  the main character, Grace,  enjoys gardening, and then bikes around the CherryPath to see what’s growing in Cherryvale, where neighbors care, gardeners share, and God allows do-overs.

Fresh Start Summer2-1-1

Winner of the 2011 San Diego Christian Writer’s Guild “Nancy Bayless Excellence in Writing” Award

Named one of Real Simple.com’s Top 21 Great Summer Books, and a finalist in the 2011 Grace Awards.

Praise for FRESH START SUMMER – “Lovable–and some not-so-lovable–characters, a delightful setting, and a humorous voice all worked together to captivate in Beverly Nault’s Fresh Start Summer… Indulge yourself in a little hometown nostalgia, where friends close ranks to help and protect their neighbors. Novel Rocket and I recommend it as athoroughly good read.” Ane Mulligan, Novel Rocket (from Amazon review)

DSC_0103So, if  you have a pesky spot where the petunias pout or the wisterias whine, you can know if the problem stems from too much or not enough sun.

To enter to win the SUNCALC:

  • Like me on Facebook or follow me on Twitter (leave a comment here letting me know!) or
  • Sign up to receive my newsletter (2-3 times a year or when news breaks) or
  • Buy one (or more!) of my books (come back here and leave a comment so I’ll know to enter your name), or
  • BONUS: If you do one of the above, plus share your own experience with making a fresh start in the comments section, I’ll enter your name twice!

SUNCAL takes the guesswork out of where to put plants based on”FULL SUN,” “PARTIAL SUN, and SHADE.

From Amazon’s description – It accurately measures the amount of accumulated light that falls on a gardener’s specific location of their property, providing you with the ability to match a plant’s light requirements (full sun, partial sun, etc.) with the actual light conditions as measured by SunCalc. All gardeners need to do is place SunCalc at the desired location, turn it on and 12 hours later return to read the results. Full Sun, Partial Sun, Partial Shade or Full Shade. A $24.00 value!

Though My Heart is Torn, Book 2 in The Cadence of Grace Series

ThoughMyHeartisTorn

Joanne Bischof has done it again!

First, a litte about her newest masterpiece, Though My Heart is Torn, (Multnomah) which by the way is on my HIGHLY recommended list, and then a bonus Q&A with Joanne about what’s funny and challenging and coming next in her writer’s life.

Here’s a setup of the book:

Shy and quiet, Lonnie Sawyer has never kissed any boy, let alone the one who has mothers whispering warnings in their daughter’s ears and fathers loading shotguns. When just one kiss seals her fate, she finds herself wedded to a man who does not love her. Yet God promises that His eye is on the Sparrow and clinging to that hope, Lonnie takes one brave step in front of the other and the Lord’s blessings unfold in her life.

Handsome ladies’ man and bluegrass musician, Gideon O’Riley, has always wanted one thing–his own satisfaction. But as his heart softens towards his young bride with the strong, quiet, faith, he begins to yearn for more; longing to become the man she deserves and to better understand the God who has saved him from a life of destruction.

You don’t have to read the first installment of The Cadence of Grace series, but I believe you’ll want to! That said, do NOT expect this series to be your run-of-the-mill, lightly treading mamby pamby romance, no sir! Just because it’s set in Appalachia around the turn of the century, there’s nothing soft or sappy about it. Bischof once again had me up until the wee hours turning the pages, every chapter had me rushing to find out how the story would unfold.

Be Still my Soul covers

And just like the first book, Be Still My Soul, this one is also  exquisitely written, with beautiful and compelling details of life in the early 1900’s.

I’ve described Joanne’s writing before as some of the best out there today, and she does not disappoint.

Joanne

Joanne Bischof
Heartfelt Fiction

Praise for Though My Heart is Torn:

“Fresh and memorable as an Appalachian spring, Though My Heart Is Torn is heartrending yet hopeful, romantic, and riveting. Joanne Bischof delivers a deeply drawn tale of hearts broken and mended in the light of the Lord’s healing love. Lonnie and Gideon’s story is one that stays with you long after you turn the last page. Highly recommended!”—Laura Frantz, author of The Colonel’s Lady and Love’s Reckoning

And now, here’s a fun Q&A with Joanne herself!

BEV: You colored outside the lines with your hero, Gideon’s character and situation. Were you ever unsure whether your readers would accept him?

JB: I really was. He’s such a scoundrel in the beginning of Be Still My Soul, and to ask readers if they wanted to follow his journey toward redemption was intimidating. And then I was blown away by how many readers rooted for him in the end! I think so many readers could relate to their own experience of needing a Savior, or having walked the road with someone searching for that healing that can only come in Christ.

BEV: Without giving away the major twists of the plot, I want readers to know your books are not our grandma’s historical fiction, and address a “what-if” situation that seems to have no possible satisfactory outcome. Is any of this based on something you’d heard of, or did you make it up just for the series?

JB: I’d say that I pretty much just made it up for this series and because of the rarity of it all, it really made it a challenge to write. There were days I just wanted to scrap it all and write about something easier, but then I had to remind myself that if I could just get my characters—and myself—through this challenge, the outcome would be all the more rewarding.

BEV: Your stories grab the reader by the hand and heart, and don’t let go until the final page. Do you ever feel guilty for making the journey so compelling we stay up way too late and ignore our own families so we can finish?

JB: Haha! Fun question! I have felt guilty a time or two when someone tells me that they didn’t go to bed until 1 in the morning or the laundry never got folded because they were too involved in the story. But it’s one of those moments that make me smile and I’m so thankful for all the readers out there who’ve picked up this series!

BEV: Your writer’s voice is so true to the era, how do you prepare to write historically?

JB: My real life often feels like a modern extension of what I write. Living in the mountains where I do, it’s not uncommon for people to grow their own food, or to bump into a man at the post office with dingy overalls and a long beard. It’s sort of every day for me. When I dive into my historical world, that old-fashioned setting is living right below the surface and it just feels natural to sort of pour all that onto the page.

BEV: Do you ever dream plots or scenes and use them?

JB: The only time that I can recall ever dreaming a plot and using it, was right in the beginning. I dreamt about an older couple who were feeling stretched thin with the farm work and with no living children around, the burden began to grow as the years wore on. That couple became Jebediah and Elsie Bennett from the series and I think they were just the couple that Lonnie and Gideon needed to find. Not because Jeb and Elsie needed the help so much, but more because Lonnie and Gideon had so much learning to do and this wise couple had plenty of love and wisdom to share.

BEV: What was the funniest thing that happened to you while you were writing TMHiT?

JB: You know, something funny happened just the other day! I was actually working on the third book in the series and was working on a scene of dialogue between the two main characters. Somehow I had the hero, Gideon say, “Lonnie, I’m so sorry I didn’t love you as much as I should have in the first book.”

I had to stop and laugh at that oopsie! J

BEV: HAHA!! Oh. me…ahem. I know you have several plates spinning at once, from homeschooling, to writing and marketing your books, and everything being a wife and mom entails. If you were given the day off, what do you dream about being able to do?

JB: That sounds just wonderful! I’m home a lot, so I think I would like to sight see. Visit one of the nearby country towns, or head to the coast. The thought of window shopping and just strolling around sounds heavenly.

BEV: If you could describe the Cadence of Grace in one sentence to someone who never read historical fiction, what would you tell them?

JB: The Cadence of Grace is a journey of the heart—a romance set against the backdrop of Appalachia, 1900.

BEV: That’s lovely. What’s the most exciting thing about being an author today? What’s the most frightening?

JB: The most exciting thing is being able to interact with so many readers. I love that we can get to know one another through blogs and Facebook. It’s such a joy to get to hear from them!  The most frightening is probably the challenges of the industry itself. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming, but then I have to stop and remind myself that God is in control. I just need to keep doing the best I can do and He will take care of the rest.

BEV: What’s next in your satchel?

JB: Next in my satchel is another historical Appalachian romance. It’s about a school teacher and a coal miner that’s an unlikely romance story. My favorite kind! I don’t know if it will ever be published, but soon I’ll be working on that more and more.

Thanks, so much, Joanne, love having you here!!
